Rivale de Pestum (China) [] Contrary to the common notion that the name alludes to the legendary roses of Paestum, Beluze named this rose 'Rivale de Pestum' because it was similar to 'Reine de Pestum', but was "... much better for cutting ..." It has been an important ancestor of some of the hardier China roses: Comtesse du Cayla, Mme. Laurette Messimy, Irène Watts and Mme. Eugène Resal, as well as the lovely 'Mevr. Nathalie Nypels'.

[Bark, petioles and stalks reddish; leaflets smaller and less undulating than those of the 'Reine de Pestum'; buds pink, rounded; petals in the heart (truncated in 'R. de Pestum'). Much more successful in cutting the Reine de Paestum.]
