Paeonia californica (or Brownii)
I found this little beauty while hiking in Caspers Wilderness Park, near San Juan Capistrano, CA. The first small colony I spotted was just emerging from the soil. The second was already maturing its seed pods. The third and largest colony was in full bloom. With the sunlight slanting through the trees, the flowers seemed to be edged in gold. Too bad the camera didn't catch what I saw. Here's a better picture.
